Goat is the common name for cloven-hoofed horned animals closely
related to Sheep. The Goats tail is shorter and the horns are long and
curve up and out while the Sheep’s are twisted. Male Goats have beards
and give off a strong odor during rutting season. The Female Goat or
Doe is called a Goat or Nanny. The Male Goat or Buck is sometimes
called a Billy Goat. The young are called Kids. Several million Goats
are raised in the United States. Goats are used for meat, milk, pets
and as a beast of burden. Angora Goats are raised for their long silky
hair called Mohair. Goat’s milk compares favorably with cows and is
more easily digested by some people. It is also used for making
cheese. Domestic Goats are classified scientifically as Capra hircus.
Sheep are the most widely distributed domestic animal and are found in
nearly all countries. Sheep were first domesticated 11,000 years ago in
what is now Iraq and there are now over 800 breeds. Domesticated Sheep
are classified scientifically as Avis aries. |
