Buck in Velvet Colorado Springs
This is our friend Buck, contemplating the meaning of life.

DEERSKIN LEATHER

Deer and Elk Leather are the core of our business.  We really enjoy and appreciate the stuff. We strive to have the largest inventory of Deer and Elk Leather of any Deerskin Trading Post in the West.  We try to maintain as much variety in color and grade as possible.
Deer and Elk are both wild animals.  They are harvested one at a time by hunters and the hides are collected one at a time.  Truly perfect, completely unblemished hides are so rare that there may as well not be any.  However, all of the Deer and Elk Leather we sell are above average.
Most people are aware that Deer and Elk Leather is most commonly dyed lighter colors.  There is a reason for this: ticks, bites, scrapes, scratches, etc. that a wild animal experiences in its life tend to be more visible the darker the leather is dyed.  This is generally considered normal, acceptable, a fact of life.
We sell the Deer Leather by the full hide.
There has been some confusion.  "Domestic", as used on this web page, does not mean a domesticated barnyard animal like a cow or a chicken.  "Domestic", as used on this web page, means that these Deerskins, which exclusively came from Wild Deer, are from the U.S.A. .
"The Story on Deerskin Grading" appears at the bottom of this web page.

THE STORY ON DEERSKIN GRADING
"The Experts Agree"

#1 This is as perfect a skin as you are likely to get off of a wild animal.  There will occasionally be a bullet hole up by the neck.  There may be some skinner cuts at the edges.

#2
This is still above average.  A bullet hole could be out towards the center of the hide; there may be a partial drag; there may be skinner cuts further in from the edges; there could be some grain damage.  These can still be usable for garments.
Craft Grade
These are lower grade skins.  There will be some holes, scars, drag marks, etcetera.  This leather is very useful for craft type projects.  This is not the "pound stock" that much of our competition slles as Craft Grade.  This is good quality Deerskin, it's just not up to our #1 or #2 Selection.  This is excellent for resellers.
TR
This stands for Tannery Run and in the world beyond Colorado Leather Goods it generally doesn't mean anything.  When we call a Deerskin a a TR, we mean a #1 that is not quite a #1 - maybe one slight blemish in the body of the hide.  These are still some of the best skins there are.  Our customers say Colorado Leather's TRs look better than the competition's #1s!
